Canonical

The preferred URL version of a page, declared to consolidate signals when duplicates or variants exist.

A canonical URL is the preferred version you want search engines to treat as primary when similar pages exist. You declare it with rel=canonical and reinforce it with consistent internal links and sitemaps. Correct canonicals protect Spanish locale pages from collapsing into the wrong regional variant.

Common failures include self-canonical mismatches, cross-locale canonicals that erase es-MX pages, and parameter URLs that never consolidate. Audit after CMS updates; plugins sometimes rewrite tags silently.

Outreach must cite the canonical live URL. If partners link to a redirected or parameterized path, fix what you control and request updates for high-value placements. Keep a redirect map so equity from older Mexican publisher links consolidates cleanly after redesigns.

Canonicalization does not fix thin content. It only consolidates duplicates. Pair technical correctness with pages worth ranking.
