Domain Rating

A third-party metric estimating the strength of a website's backlink profile on a logarithmic scale.

Domain Rating (DR) is a proprietary score popularized by Ahrefs that estimates how strong a site’s backlink profile looks relative to others in their index. It is useful for triage and vendor conversations. It is not a Google metric and it does not guarantee rankings on google.com.mx or google.com.

Treat DR as a conversation starter. A mid-tier Spanish publisher with engaged readers can outperform a high-DR domain that sells links in every niche. Conversely, very low DR combined with zero organic visibility often signals a site that will not help durable SEO.

When scoring Mexican or broader LatAm inventory, pair DR with topical fit, language authenticity, traffic direction, and outbound neighborhood checks. Ask whether the DR was earned from relevant referring domains or from reciprocal schemes. Look at referring domain growth over time rather than a single snapshot.

Reporting tip: educate clients early so they do not equate success with average DR of acquired links. Report relevance notes and landing-page outcomes beside the number. If a partner only sells “DR50+ packages” without qualitative gates, expect footprint risk.

Internally, set flexible DR floors by campaign tier, then allow strategists to approve exceptions when editorial quality is exceptional. Freeze domains that spike DR through obvious network patterns. Re-audit quarterly because scores move as indexes refresh.
