Defined term
Link Velocity
The rate at which a site gains (or loses) referring domains and backlinks over time.
Link velocity is the pace of new link acquisition. Natural brands see irregular spikes from PR, campaigns, and seasonality. Artificial campaigns sometimes show rigid monthly totals that look manufactured. Neither extreme alone proves spam, yet velocity is a useful monitoring lens.
For new Spanish market entrants, ramping too fast with low-quality blogs can create risk without rankings. A steadier cadence of relevant editorial links usually fits better, with occasional PR spikes when stories deserve them.
Interpret velocity beside quality. Ten excellent newsroom links in a week after a data launch can be healthy. Ten marketplace posts every Monday forever looks unnatural. Watch losses too: sudden drops may mean site migrations or cleanup.
Set expectations with clients that months vary. Inventory constraints, holidays in Mexico, and news cycles affect output. Report narrative context with charts so stakeholders do not treat velocity as a factory KPI.
